A new cost effective way to measure business performance, the Fitness Market Monitor, will be launched at the end of 2008.

Being able to track trends compared to the total market, region and specific sector will provide the intelligence to adjust spending and direction, support the successes and cut losses early; an essential tool in the current climate.

Aimed at both public and private sectors, Fitness Market Monitor will collect key performance data from fitness operators on a monthly basis.  Subscribers to the service will be able to access reports for benchmarking purposes.

The Fitness Market Monitor will fill a vacuum, agreeing industry-wide definitions, providing benchmarking performance where you can track membership numbers, joiners, leavers and revenue on a monthly basis. From this you’ll see ratios, yields and trends on national and sector-specific scale.

Amongst others, Fitness First, Marriott Leisure Clubs, the Reebok Club, Serco Leisure, Ark Leisure plus a number of trusts including Rochdale, Wychavon Leisure, Jubilee Halls, Freedom Leisure and Tone Leisure have given their commitment to the new benchmarking service and, to date, the support represents almost 700 sites.  When the target of 1,000 sites (approximately fifty per cent of the UK fitness membership base) is reached, the service will be launched.

The guiding principles for Fitness Market Monitor are that it will be robust, representative and inclusive. The Monitor will provide truly comparative trends and ratios that can be relied upon to represent the whole industry and can demonstrate the micro climates of the individual sectors too.

Operators will use the intelligence provided by Fitness Market Monitor to evaluate various aspects of their business in relation to best practice.  The data provided could be used to monitor performance in the current tougher times and in business cases for innovation or continual service improvement.  The Fitness Market Monitor will be a powerful management tool.
