Establishing one authoritative register of sports facilities in England has enhanced the quality and reliability of sports data. The register also serves as an integral tool in the strategic assessment of gaps in sporting provision and priorities for future investment. It is designed to assist in investment decisions and the development of infrastructure improvement strategies for sport. Supply of the right sporting facilities to target areas is a key part of the Active Places remit in improving the overall health of the nation.

Each site is audited through a rolling annual telephone audit, using pre-completed questionnaires.  Furthermore, individual sites are encouraged to update their own records, ensuring the public have access to the very latest information. Telephone calls may be recorded for training or quality purposes.
